Domfront castle took place on the
border between the county of Maine and the Duchy of Normandy. It
was disputed between those two principalities during the whole first
half of the eleventh century. William II of Normandy, soon after
king of England, annexed it in 1052 after a several months siege.
In 1092, prince Henry (king of England after 1100) laid hold of
the fortress. He’s assuredly the builder of the rectangular
keep ever visible today. King Henry II of England or his son Richard
Lioheart completed the defenses. From this period probably dates
the east curtain, with a suprising vaulted gallery with many arrow-slits
embrasures.
