After the loss of Norman Vexin in 1196, the king of England and duke of Normandy Richard Lion Heart wanted to bar the road of Rouen to his French enemy, Philippe Auguste. For that purpose, it built on the Seine with the height of Andeli an enormous strengthened complex whose Castle Gaillard constituted the heart.
