Extremely old Châtellenie of Poitou, Gençay became possession of the family of Ransom in XIe century, Geoffroy IV chooses the party of king de France in 1241-1242, at the time of the revolt of the Aquitanian lords and poitevins; well took some to him, since it profited from royal liberalities to rebuild to nine its castle. This one played a great role during the One hundred Year old war, but the seats which it undergoes were not never destroying: the ruin came only at the XIXe century.
