This castle is one
of the most beautiful fortresses of Brittany. Strengthened from
the very start of XIe century, it was besieged and taken in XIIe
century. Its owner, Guy XV of Laval, opened it without combat with
the French troops of occupation in 1487. The Parliament of Brittany
settled there at the time of the great epidemics of plague in 1564,
1582 and 1583. Its enclosure, of triangular plan, takes again the
layout of the castle rebuilt in XIIIe century and offers a series
of buildings of the end of XIVe to XVIe centuries. The most remarkable
parts are the tower the St. Lawrence (beginning of XVe) which probably
acted as keep, and especially the châtelet, entered strengthened
between two turns and surmounted elegant home, to which the structure,
characterized by a large arc bandaged above the door, is close to
that of the castle of Montmuran. The castle shelters today the town
hall, the museum, and allows a visit of most interesting. |
