Langeais is one of the most interesting examples of castle construction in the whole Middle Ages. Two buildings on the same site are 200 metres and five centuries apart. The first was an avant-garde stone keep built about 1000 AD by Fulk Nerra, count of Anjou. The second is a gatehouse-and-living quarters block dating from 1465-1470. It was designed by architect Jean Bourré for the French king Louis XI.
